OUTREACH

For the general public:

Lab members form an integral part of the outreach and public service efforts of the Department of Plant Pathology and Ecology and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. These include:

Public lectures or discussions on topics relating to agriculture and the environment, accessible to non-scientist audiences (Gardening clubs, Rotarians, 4-H clubs, etc). For example, I have previously given talks about plant disease resistance, plant genetic modification, careers in agriculture, and the history of the rice variety Carolina Gold. Click here for the full list of example lecture topics offered by CAES scientists. We suggest you request a speaker at least a month in advance, and longer if you would like to hear about a specific topic not listed.

Diagnostic assistance with bacterial plant diseases in Connecticut. All diagnostics inquiries should be submitted to the CAES Plant Disease Information Office, located on the first floor of Jenkins-Waggoner Building on the New Haven campus, or the Plant Disease Inquiry Office in Windsor.

Fact Sheets providing concise information on plant disease or other issues faced by Connecticut growers and homeowners. Click here for a list of all fact sheets published by CAES.

Plant Science Day is a fun and family-friendly showcase of CAES research held at Lockwood Farm in Hamden each August. Plan to come visit us on August 2, 2017!

For students and educators:

K-12: We have been able to lead fun in-class plant science or microbiology activities for a limited number of local school classes each year, either in the home classroom or as a field trip to the research station. Please contact me for more information.

University: When time permits, we are happy to talk about our research areas at local departmental seminar series, symposia, and class lectures. Please e-mail me for schedule information. In addition, we can accommodate one to two interns for credit each semester. We also welcome you to check out the CAES Seminar Series of scientific talks open to the public.
